“So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy.”

- 1 Peter 1:14-15

Worn Out

Worn Out

The knees on my son’s pants are always the first to get worn out. It seems within a week there is wear and tear on the knees of his pants. He plays hard and doesn’t hold back, so paired with his growth rate, it seems we are always trying to find new pants for him. It struck me the other day that all Christians’ pants should look like my nine-year-old son’s. As Christians, we should all have pants with worn out knees. Scripture is filled with examples of kneeling for prayer.

“Come, let us worship and bow down.
Let us kneel before the Lord our maker,
    for he is our God.
We are the people he watches over,
the flock under his care.” (Psalm 95:6-7)

“At the time of the sacrifice, I stood up from where I had sat in mourning with my clothes torn. I fell to my knees and lifted my hands to the Lord my God.” (Ezra 9:5)

“When he had finished speaking, he knelt and prayed with them.” (Acts 20:36)

“When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father,” (Ephesians 3:14)

“He walked away, about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed,” (Luke 22:41)

David knelt in prayer. Ezra fell to his knees. Paul prayed on his knees often. And the most significant example of all is Jesus praying in the garden before His crucifixion. Kneeling is a sign of reverence and submission. To get on your knees when you pray is to physically demonstrate what you are doing with your words in prayer. It is a physical submission to God out of reverence for Him. If Jesus took this posture of submission and reverence to God, how much more so should we? This physical act of kneeling will help us to understand the importance and significance of prayer. Don’t let the signficiance of talking with the Creator of the universe pass you by. The curtain of the Holy of Holies has been torn in two; we can come to God anytime we wish. Let us come with a posture of submission and reverence. Consider moving your knees for your morning prayers. What would the world be like if all Christians walked around with the knees worn out of their pants?

To the glory of the Lord God, whose I am, and whom I serve.
