“So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy.”

- 1 Peter 1:14-15

Let There Be Light

Let There Be Light

The first words we have recorded of God speaking is the creation of light. Light is fundamental to our vision; we couldn’t see without it. The human eye is capable of absorbing and processing more than ten million pieces of information per second and yet it couldn’t do it without light; there would be no sight without light.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” (Genesis 1:1-3)

We were designed to require light. Without light, we cannot function. We’ve written about the fact that there is no tool for measuring darkness; we can only measure the amount of light present in any given situation. This is the same way our eyes work. Our pupils dilate to allow more light in. This world can seem very, very dark, but we need to remember we have the Light of the world with us at all times. When it seems dark, that’s when we need to allow more of Jesus’ Light in.

“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.’” (John 8:12)

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” (John 1:5)

No matter how dark it seems, remember that the darkness can never extinguish the light. When times are darkest, allow more of Jesus’ light in by going to Him in prayer, reading the Scriptures, and meeting with Christian brothers and sisters. When it seems darkest, let there be light.

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
