“So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy.”

- 1 Peter 1:14-15

When Good Men Do Nothing

When Good Men Do Nothing

There’s a popular saying that goes, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” It seems more and more in America that people feel emboldened to speak up about what they believe in, especially if they have mob-level numbers of people to back them up. Last year saw protests, demonstrations, and riots all throughout the country, all summer long. Ideas clashed with force because people are not remaining silent about the things they believe in. People are so willing to yell at each other or accuse each other or condemn leaders and those in power, but are we remaining silent to the only One with real Authority? When was the last time you prayed? Not just a quick recitation, but when was the last time you had quiet, alone time to have a serious conversation with God?

“But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.” (Luke 5:16)

Luke noted that Jesus often went away by himself to pray. If Jesus needed this alone time with God, how much more do we? Evil will prevail if good people do nothing. When was the last time you prayed for your enemies? When is the last time you talked to God about the state of our country? If you are not petitioning the Lord in prayer, then aren’t you doing nothing? Is there someone more capable than God of solving the racial divide in this country? Is there someone more capable than the Lord of healing our broken land? When is the last time you talked to God and asked Him for His help in areas that concern you?

“Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

If you have been called by God, then humble yourself and pray. Seek His face and turn from your sinful ways. Do this, and God promises to hear us, forgive us, and restore our land. Our land needs restoration and God has promised to bring it, but we must hold up our end and meet the requirements God has set. Do not spend your time complaining about the circumstances around you; instead, go to the One who can overcome anything. Turn from your wicked ways, humble yourself, and seek after God. Think of what this country could become if every person called by God did these things. Our land desperately needs restoration from the Lord. Take the time daily to put yourself aside, turn from your sinful nature and desires, and intentionally pray to our great God.

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
