Jesus Above Others

Hans Zimmer is my favorite music composer. Over the last few years, it’s been fun learning what movies he has scored and being surprised at how many movies he scored that I grew up with. While watching Kung Fu Panda, the music was so beautiful that I looked up who the composer was and it was Hans Zimmer. When we first watched The Crown and the opening music came on with the titles, I said, “That sounds like Hans Zimmer” and indeed it was. When you listen to a composer long enough, you start to get an ear for their music and it’s possible to identify the composer simply by hearing their music. This same phenomena can occur when we read the Gospels regularly. We can begin to recognize Jesus’ voice when we are familiar with it and when we face temptations in life, knowing Scripture is one of our greatest weapons.

“I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119:11)

“Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.” (Joshua 1:8)

“Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.” (Colossians 3:16)

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” (2 Timothy 3:16)

“How can a young person stay pure? By obeying your word.” (Psalm 119:9)

When Jesus was tempted by Satan, it was Scripture He used to combat and drive off the temptations. We need to know Jesus’ voice through the diligent reading of Scripture. The more we read the Bible, the more familiar His voice will become and the more weapons we have to combat Satan’s attacks. But if we are surrounding ourselves with the noise of this world, it will be that much more difficult to hear Jesus’ voice, especially in those unexpected moments of life. When storms rise up without warning and we need direction from Jesus, it is so important to know His voice above all others. So where does Jesus’ voice rank in your life? Do you know a celebrity’s voice better? Or a composer’s? If we are instead studying the current trends on social media and following our favorite celebrity, more than we are studying Scripture, then we will have a lot of voices and sounds in our life that can work to drown out Jesus’ voice. Remember, it is Jesus above others not Jesus among others.

“Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names” (Philippians 2:9)

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
