“So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy.”

- 1 Peter 1:14-15

Give Me Shelter

Give Me Shelter

With summer in full swing and COVID restrictions winding down, many families are returning to their favorite vacation spots for some much needed rest and relaxation. Where do you take shelter from the stresses of life? Where do you find your rest and relaxation? Maybe it’s a favorite vacation spot. Maybe you relax by shopping or playing a round of golf. Perhaps you’ve made your backyard a haven or you find a little R&R in a soak in the bathtub. Maybe you find rest and shelter in an app on your phone and you find your peace by simply sitting and scrolling.

“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him.” (Psalms 91:1-2)

This world will try to offer us endless ways of finding rest and relaxation, shelter from the stresses of life, but the Scriptures declare that we will find rest in the shadow of God Almighty if we live in His shelter. God alone should be our place of refuge and safety. We try hard to make little pockets in our lives sources of safety but the fact of the matter is, this world is a fallen and broken place. Whatever rest and shelter we find in it is only a shadow of real rest and shelter, refuge and safety. The only true rest and peace is found in God.

“You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.” (James 4:4)

“‘I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.’” (John 16:33)

May we not be found living in this world seeking its comforts as a friend seeks a friend, but rather let us be found living in the shelter of God for when we live in the shelter of the Most High, we will find rest in His shadow and He will be our only refuge and place of safety.

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
