When we are in darkness, our eyes dilate, the pupils widening to allow more light to reach the retina. Automatically, when faced with a dark situation, our eyes search for light and work to allow in more light. This is the way God has designed our eye to work and it’s a beautiful example of how we should live our lives. In the darkest of times, we need to search for light to allow in more.  

“Even when I walk
    through the darkest valley,
I will not be afraid,
    for you are close beside me.
Your rod and your staff
    protect and comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4)

“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” (John 8:12)

“He must become greater; I must become less.” (John 3:30)

Don’t rage against the darkness, don’t close yourself off to avoid the darkness—search for the Light. When the marriage hits its lowest point, allow in more Light. When the job is lost and the future is uncertain, allow in more Light. When the pregnancy test is negative again, allow in more Light. When problems don’t ever seem to stop, allow in more Light. When the family rejects you over and over, allow in more Light.

This entire thing we call “being a Christian” is about having a relationship with Jesus Christ, and we all need to work every day at strengthening and deepening that relationship. He must become greater. As we draw closer to God and deepen our relationship, let us search for His Light even in the darkest of times. Open yourself up to allow in more and more of His Light.
