Walking Closer With Your Rabbi

As this is the last day of the month, I wanted to share a new monthly reading plan I have been following for the past month. I first heard of the plan from Pastor Dave Adamson, who uses social media to minister to people and help them take their next steps in their faith journey. You can check him out on Twitter here. Dave presented this reading plan on his Youtube channel. 

The challenge is that if I can't find the time to read all four gospels every single month, then I can't call myself a disciple of Christ because I am not spending enough time with my Rabbi. It seems extreme but think of it in comparison with the original disciples of Christ. In Jesus' day a disciple spent every moment with their Rabbi. They wanted to learn not only everything the Rabbi taught, but how they interacted with people, how they ate, who they ate with, how they behaved when they were sad, angry, etc. They were known as disciples because they spent their lives with Jesus. 

We as Christians have given our lives over to Christ and accepted Him as our Lord and Savior but are we spending every day with Jesus, learning from Jesus, studying how he interacted with people, how he answered tough questions, how he grieved? If not, what's our excuse?

"Jesus answered, 'If you want to be perfect, then go and sell all that you own. Give the money to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven. Then come and follow me!'

"But when the young man heard Jesus tell him to give away his money, he was sad. He didn’t want to do this, because he was very rich. So he left." (Matthew 19:21-22)

"He said to another person, 'Come, follow me.'

The man agreed, but he said, 'Lord, first let me return home and bury my father.'

But Jesus told him, 'Let the spiritually dead bury their own dead! Your duty is to go and preach about the Kingdom of God.'

Another said, 'Yes, Lord, I will follow you, but first let me say good-bye to my family.'

But Jesus told him, 'Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God.'” (Luke 9:59-62)

Are we true disciples of Christ or do we sound more like these people, making excuses as to why we can't follow Jesus closer? So I extend the challenge to you as we start this new month: read all four gospels this month, one gospel per week, (about 3-5 chapters per day) and see how much closer you walk with Jesus and what new things you will learn from Him. Will you rise to this challenge to walk closer with your Rabbi?

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
